Concerned Citizen: Letter to the Editor of the Sentinel

Lykos
I am going to be writing these here on the Fiction Forum, as they are not appropriate for a weekly feature in the Sentinel itself.

The following weekly posts will be from a "Concerned Citizen" of New Amsterdam that has decided that no one else will listen to them complain about Super Heroes, so they are now bugging the editors of the local newspaper.

The first post is entitled "Hero Worship". I hope you all enjoy it.

Letter to the Editor of the Sentinel: Hero Worship

Letter to the Editor

Hero Worship

We have put up with a lot here in New Amsterdam, more than most cities have to bare. These new-fangled superpowers started popping up; regular folk getting turned into Caped Crusaders overnight.  It just ain't natural.

We have seen crime rise steadily, despite so many so-called "Heroes" all over the place. Would someone mind explaining to us normal people why things have only gotten worse since they arrived? First there was an “Alien Invasion”, which I have my doubts about to begin with. And if the Aliens were real, maybe they were here to help us out, not invade! If they are the ones who gave us these people with superpowers, it makes NO SENSE that they would be here to fight us. I am not buying it.

Then you have this Acronym Government Agency suddenly showing up at the same time heroes all start showing up.  If the aliens brought it, how did the government suddenly have an agency ready to go so quickly?  And they seem to have international freedom, flying all over the world and in outer space. Doesn’t that seem fishy to anyone else?

They drive around in their black vans with “B.A.D.G.E” written on the side and suddenly think we should pull over when they come tearing down my street. That man they have running the joint, what is his name, Nova? Yeah, that aint a real name. Who are these people who seem to control the super powered dupes?  Who is really in charge? It ain’t that guy that walks around with a trench coat and eyepatch. He is obviously just the face of the operation (But I have to admit, it is quite the handsome face!).

Every month some new crisis is going on. My god, did you hear what happened in Las Vegas?  That could have been us! I am genuinely concerned that I live in a city that seems to attract superpowers and people and things from other dimensions!  Did you know what happened to my neighbor’s car? If it hadn’t been for that Scottish Guy in black ripping the door off, they would have been eaten by some silver goo. Then he ran off like it was just another Wednesday!

Now, these Capes are flying and running all over the city looking for "Gold Coins". Don't try to deny it, we have all seen them. I watched as one super powered lady, said her name was Crossorads when I demanded it, interrupted a mugging and picked up a gold coin - While fighting the villain!  It was preposterous!

Look, everyone is grateful when a super-type suddenly shows up and stops some guy from robbing you in a parking garage, but come on - Do we have to worship these people in every single article I read in your rag? How about you write about some of their mistakes? Write about some of the problems that go along with having a percentage of your population suddenly have unregulated, unrestricted, powers! I don’t think it is fair at ALL that some of the people get these powers and the rest of us have to sit back and deal with the aftermath. Either we all get powers or NONE of us get powers. THAT is the way it should be!

This won't be that last time your newspaper hears from me!

Signed,
"Concerned Citizen"
