Madam Marvelous: Chapter Five -- Frozen Vacuum (Collaborative -- Open to All)

Madam Marvelous
I hated waiting...

Every day I had to wait made me want to break things.

I went out and found out what the van's crew was up to. I went up the pole and found the device. I called in some fellow heroes to find out what was going on with them. Catalyst figured out what they were and how to destroy them. Miss Fae knew something was wrong and joined us, suggesting that fed the information up to the rest of BADGE...

And then they took over. I was told 'Thank you' and 'You're efforts are appreciated' and even a 'Good Job', and then left at my doorstep with my parents as everyone else headed off. Did being a probationary BADGE field agent always suck this much?

Weeks went past and I had no idea what happened. Everyone went quiet. I tried Catalyst, and he brushed me off politely telling me 'everything is being handled'.  What does that mean? Who did it? Why? What was going on?

At least the creepy guy stopped broadcasting his messages. I guess that was a good thing. I had a good Thanksgiving with my parents while I waited, I guess. Nothing is all bad when there is freshly baked Pumpkin Pie around.

But the pie has all been eaten, I'm back to my normal classes at the Sagan Academy, and my intuition tells me there is still something going on that needs to be taken care of.

As I walked the corridors between classes, I spotted Astra off in the distance. Maybe I could ask her if she knew anything. They might have filled her in with details on what happened or used her mother to figure out some information about who is behind it all.

I waited for lunch to confront her. Things were cooler outside, so all meals had to be eaten inside the cafeteria this time of year. I spotted her sitting alone near a window and searched the room for Doug. It was strange, but I didn't recall seeing him for a few days. I hoped he was doing OK? I needed to ask her about him too, I guess.

"Hey Keri," I said as I slid into a chair at her table. Fortunately, the Sagan Academy offered real round tables to eat at, large enough to seat up to ten people, but not the long benches like in public schools. "I haven't talked to you since Thanksgiving. How was your holiday?"

Keri was in deep thought when Kitt'n sat down next to her.  It wasn't anything serious.  She was just mulling over things she learned over the holiday.  Mainly the differences in Human and Elf biology and society. "Hey Keri, I haven't talked to you since Thanksgiving. How was your holiday?" Kitt'n asked.

"Hi, Kitt'n," Keri greeted with a smile.  "Thanksgiving was," she paused, "interesting."

    "How so?" Kitt'n questioned.

"Well, mom had invited Doug's parents over as well as her biological children," Keri explained.  "I met my adoptive siblings, Silverhair, a half elf, and Thrav'iel a full blooded elf.  Then mom's siblings showed up unannounced."

"Doug's mom made a spectacular roasted turkey," Keri continued.  "Mom and her siblings are vegetarians, so, they didn't touch it.  Mom graciously hosted and chatted with all present.  Silverhair lives with his father and celebrates like a human.  Thrav'iel rejects elf society because they rejected her mom.  Mom's siblings wanted to meet me and my siblings.  It's odd, mom's the eldest and they all look older than her?" Keri seemed puzzled.

"We talked about a lot of things," Keri stated.  "Silverhair has powers from both of his parents, some temporal control, body of metal and psionic powers.  Thrav'iel is an actual elf.  Magic and that sort of stuff.  It's nice to know I have a super powered sibling and a magical sibling.  I wonder if Krystal Fae knows Thrav'iel?"

"Anyway, how was your holiday?" Keri asked.

Re: Madam Marvelous: Chapter Five -- Frozen Vacuum (Collaborative -- Open to All)

Madam Marvelous
"Wow. That's some family to be a part of. Magic elves and psionically gifted. Mine is so boring by comparison. Mom and Dad had his parents over for the day, and we had to explain Eggie to them. I think my Grandma Rose got a bit jealous of her and I spending so much time together. We ate, I watched football with my dad and Gramps, but mostly I wondered about what was going on with that thing in my neighborhood." I said to Keri, hoping she'd pick up on my hint.

"That thing in your neighborhood?" Keri asked before speaking directly into my mind. "You mean about the devices you found? You haven't heard anything about that yet? I would have expected Director Nova to call in some teams for that."

"That's what I was wondering. People around the city still seem really out of sorts. I saw graffiti posted on some billboards about the League War announcement. Everyone loves Santa, but making the holiday league war in honor of Krampus and his love for avalanches has some people pretty upset. It was only a year ago he and poor Lady Phoenix destroyed that city on the coast. It's the season of forgiveness, but I don't think everyone is willing to let go and be merry about it." I said. I didn't really understand the naming of the event myself, but I never had lost a sibling, so I figured Santa had to be pretty hurt still by the loss.

"With Judge Alpha still actively trying to investigate the heroes and deflecting all questions about the Augmements and the attacks on D.C., people don't have a very good opinion about heroes, even with everything we did for those displaced. Two steps forward and two steps back," Kerri said with a troubled smile. "I think heroes are going to see a lot of small fires all over the world this year before things get better for anyone."

So, you haven't heard anything at all about what happened with the information we passed on to BADGE? I thought back to Astra.

Keri shook her head. "Maybe after school we can go ask a certain journalism instructor if she knows anything, if she's in today. She's been awful busy with that husband of hers around these days..."

I giggled.

Madam Marvelous
Krystal Fae sat in her office and read over a field report from agents of the investigative arm of BADGE.

"It is our opinion that the devices discovered in Sector NA-1708 were placed by an known Morphon-enhanced individual designated Major Depression. His known abilities involve a powerful telepathic field that can induce extreme levels of negative cognitive conditions, including depressive episodes, mania, and suicidal drives. As people are exposed to his "dark motivations", he gains in personal strength.

He has manipulated a fair number of minions to work under his supervision, but he himself has not been seen in person for several months. He tends to use televised broadcasts and video messaging to deliver his orders.

Originally, his abilities and influence were limited in scope, but the technologies he has recently employed around New Amsterdam are of significant means and capability. It is our assessment that he has been funded or backed by another villainous individual who seeks the same measure of control and downplay of positive community attitudes.

There have been some unusual agents seen working with Major Depression's helpers that have not been identified, but do give off unusual readings to Nth Dimensional technologies used to observe them. It is possible the new agents are from an extra-dimensional home-base. Their appearance is reminiscent of elves, such as Futurina and the Sword of Gerraxia, but their skin is typically much darker in hue. We are attempting to garner more information on these individuals and the faction they are aligned with.

There have been two reported altercations between these units of Major Depression/X?? and two differing growing power centers. The first was between elemental agents of the so called "Miser" Brothers. These two siblings exhibit heat and snow based Morphon abilities and have been causing disturbances in regions of Canada's weather patterns.

The second altercation was with a different organization of insectoid creatures who have been using underground tunnels to rob differing targets over the past several months. More information is to follow..."

"Wait," Keri looked confused, "The Sword Of Gerraxia is an elf?"  Her eyes went wide at this information.  How did she not see the ears?  She looks human in all the photos and even when they met in person.  How was this possible?  Doug stood next to her.  Krystal turned quickly around to see them.

"Sorry to interrupt, Ms. Fae," Doug stated.  "You sent for me, about my cloned body?"  He was earnest and dressed in his school uniform.  "Keri just came along for moral support."  He shifted nervously.

"I apologize, Keri... yes, Gerri does happen to be of the Elvish race... It was not my place to tell you."

"Why does she look human, then? Is it some sort of trick? An Invasion?", asked the confused young Heroine.

"For centuries, those from my realm have been sent to this dimension... it is difficult to explain, but there are reasons... portals, artifacts, magic itself... it was deemed necessary that they be protected, guarded... so elves, fae, and even some few fairies have been assigned certain... duties... by Fae-re's rulers."

"Is that why you came, Ms. Fae?", asked Keri.

"No... not all of Fae-re agreed with the decree... Morganna and others of her ilk would have sorely used this realm, and plundered it of many of its magical resources and artifacts... I truly came here to stop her, and the others have been here for many centuries to protect this realm.", Krystal said quietly.

"I... I... guess I understand... but why hide from us?", asked Keri.

"When Magic became feared instead of favored, it was decided that the assigned guardians use their natural abilities to seem human in cases where the resemblance was already close... the few fairies that remained used their natural gifts of invisibility and speed to remain for the most part undetected... and so the tales of our kind became the stuff of folklore and legend.", Krystal answered.

"In the meantime, young Douglas... I wanted to let you know that your clone is nearing maturity... we should discuss the arrangements for your transfer."

Doug was excited his cloned body was nearly ready.  Keri and Starmaster guided his Astral self into this robotic form, would that work to re-inhabit his human form again?  Krystal Fae did say it might work but there may be something else required.  He also knew he might lose his powers if he did this.  Still it would be worth it to feel and taste and smell again.

"Oh my God!" Keri exclaimed.  "I forgot to ask Krystal Fae about Thrav'iel.  Now I'll never know if she knows of Futurina's other daughter."

"I'm sure you'll get another chance," Doug smiled.  "I'm going to be a real human again! Yes!"  He pumped his fist in excitement.  She smiled at her friend.  There was a hint of sadness in her eyes.  He noticed and asked "Is something wrong, Kev, I mean, Keri?"

"No, no, I'm happy for you," she sighed.  "I'm glad you get to return to your normal life."  Then it dawned on him.  Kevin's parents declared him dead and tried to get Keri arrested.

"I'm sorry, Keri," Doug stated.  "I didn't mean to make you sad.  You lost your family because of this."

"It's not that," Keri corrected.  "I have a new family.  You met them at Thanksgiving.  I'm fine, it just brought up memories of my real parents rejecting me.  I'm really happy for you."

"We need to find Kitt'n and let her know what we found out," Keri mentioned.  "Perhaps leaving out what we discovered about the Sword of Gerraxia."

Re: Madam Marvelous: Chapter Five -- Frozen Vacuum (Collaborative -- Open to All)

Madam Marvelous
I walked up to Miss Fae's office door at the Sagan Academy and heard people exiting the room. I stepped behind the door as it opened into the hallway and let Keri and Doug pass, clearly deep in conversation. Both of them had been through so much. I couldn't understand why Keri/Kevin's parents couldn't accept what happened to her. My parents went through a lot, and I mean a LOT the day I was born, and every day after as I grew into my shapeshifting powers. I matured much faster than either of them could expect and every day in the crib was an adventure until I finally understood Mom and Dad preferred walking into my nursery and finding a baby HUMAN inside instead of a snake, possum, or turtle.

I couldn't imagine not having them as part of my daily life. And based on their actions every day at home, they seemed to want me around and cared,... loved me despite the difficulties of my wanting to be a hero. Maybe there was a way I could help Keri's parents understand she was still their son underneath whatever appearance he might have. Not accepting Keri/Kevin because of his packaging made no sense at all, but I could alter mine at will, so I had to trust the explanation my parents gave me on the topic. "People are like books, kiddo. Not every person is written the same way. You might like fantasy or romance, but not everyone out there does. If we were all the exactly the same, it might be easier to understand why other people are like they are, but wouldn't that be kind of boring?"

I wished Keri had some boring to her life. She talked a big game about having a new family, but I sometimes thought she brought up her adopted mother being her ADOPTED mother a bit too easily, almost as if she were still trying to convince herself that it was real.

Maybe after I talked to Miss Fae about the investigation into the devices, I could ask her about Keri. I mean, as heroes we help strangers all the time when they need us. I wanted to help my friend.

As Keri and Doug walked away, I gently tapped on Miss Fae's door. "Good afternoon, Miss Fae. Do you have a moment to spare to talk about... non-school stuff?"

"I can spare as much time as you need, Blossom. Close the door, please, if I think your going to talk about what I'm pretty sure you're going to talk about." Miss Fae stood up from her chair and walked over to the window overlooking the school grounds. As the door clicked shut, she turned and leaned back against the register that blew cool air into the room, making her hair dance a bit on the edges of her elegant hairstyle. "I'm afraid I haven't heard much new beyond the fact it is being investigated and it seems the culprit behind it is not alone in their desire to stir things up for the season."

"Who wants to mess with Christmas? That's just silly?" I shook my head, baffled by the thought. Everyone loved to get presents and eat good food.

"You'll find as you experience more of life that things are often counterbalanced in reality. What some may think and value as a good thing, others benefit from its opposite. Life has a duality to it, like a coin. You can't have one aspect without the other being present at the same time," she said as she telekinetically lifted a strange looking coin into the air and rotated it. "While you observe the one face of it, the other is hidden but still present. The culprit behind the caper you discovered seems to be wanting to manipulate people who are effected differently by the holidays, those who don't see their blessings from the past year but only see the opposite. The loss of some things, jealousy of those who have what they do not."

"Well, give those people their coal and tell them to get over it." I said. "Christmas is a time for feeling happy not sad."

"Changing feelings isn't always as easy as that." Krystal said.

Re: Madam Marvelous: Chapter Five -- Frozen Vacuum (Collaborative -- Open to All)

Madam Marvelous
"BADGE discovered our efforts far too early," the masked figure of Major Depression said over his iso-linked communications device to his crew leaders working around the nation. "We are going to have to move on to Phase Turtledove. The partridges will not be singing, so we need to begin our attacks on jewelry stores across the nation. There can be no joyous proposals across the nation if there aren't any engagement rings to be had, and as we know, if an item becomes scarce around the holidays, then the jewelers that have paid their protection fees will raise their prices."

One multiple feeds, his masked crew-leaders nodded. One by one, the screens went black and Major Depression leaned back in his chair. "Now to work on my plans to ensure that as many people as possible have a very blue holiday indeed." He opened up a file before him and stared at a photo of Santa speaking with Director Nova. "Santa shouldn't have involved himself in the League War festivities this year. Missing his brother and dedicating the combat to Krampus gives me a wonderful idea on how to keep him from making his yearly trip. Children in every country will learn what sadness truly is this year."

Re: Madam Marvelous: Chapter Five -- Frozen Vacuum (Collaborative -- Open to All)

Madam Marvelous
I considered what Miss Fae said, but it was a much bigger idea than I wanted to focus on at the moment. Philosophy wasn't my thing. I saw good as good and evil as evil, plain and simple right vs wrong. Her belly was a bit more... profound than the last time I saw her and I remembered a promise I made to myself. I leaned in closer to her stomach. "Hi Gem. You haven't visited me in a while, so I thought I would stop by and say hello. How have you been? Growing strong I hope, but not too big yet."

Krystal placed a hand on her stomach and winced. "She's not saying much, but I can tell she knows you're here. Thank you for engaging with her."

"Do you think she might be here in time for Christmas? I was shopping with my Mom... no reading my mind please, I want it to be a surprise... and I found the perfect present for her room." Gem would be nice to get to know in real life, not just through her astral projections. I thought about how much fun she and I could have if Miss Fae ever let us have a play date or a sleep over.

"Everything in its own time, Kitt'n," Miss Fae said with a smile. "All I prefer is that she joins us when she is ready and healthy."

"Do you think there is going to be a problem?" I never considered Gem might be unwell, and that was why she hadn't been born yet.

"No, certainly not. I've done plenty of tests and examinations. She's perfectly fine, but there are always unforeseen possibilities with any pregnancy, and she is a very special, unique girl. I plan on being ready for every potential circumstance and have several friends who will be there at the right time to welcome here safely into the world."

Futurina entered the Star Force base.  She wore her blue leather armor, blue leather jacket with the collar flipped up, blue leather thigh high boots, silvery leggings and sash tied at her waist.  She carried a bottle of her favorite black cherry wine, a goblet and two shot glasses.  She was meeting Wyldfyre and Starmaster to share what their investigations brought to light.

She greeted the two heroes when she found them.  She set the bottle and glasses down on the table.  She smiled and said, "So who wants to go first?"  She uncorked the bottle and poured the two shots and slid them over to the two heroes.  She then poured her goblet and smiled.  "No volunteers?"

"Oh, there you are, Kitt'n," Keri said as she saw Kitt'n leave Krystal's office.  "We've been looking foryou to discuss what we found out."

"It's okay I just talked to Ms. Fae about that," Kitt'n replied.

"Oh, we can still discuss it if you want," Keri stated.

"Futurina, you're welcome to bring a bottle to any meeting, especially when they involve Director Nova. Patch needs to learn to relax a bit." Wyldfyre took the offered glass and took a sip. "Now that's niiiice."

Starmaster took his glass and held it to the noseplate of his mask. "Fragrant, but if you don't mind, I'll let mine breath a bit. What do you know about what's going on? Is there anything the Star Force can do to help?"

"Do I smell Black Cherry Wine?" Silver Paladin said as he sauntered into the room. Instead of his typical metallic body armor, he wore a martial art gi. His resemblance to Chaz was striking to see first hand, despite some subtle variances in hair length and facial grooming. His mind was like an open book though, and Futurina could easily sense his memories of tasting wines with Puck while in the FaeRe. Where once his mind was rigid and highly ordered with priorities of honor and nobility, his current demeanor was chaotic, eager to experience new sensations. "I'll have a glass."

"Why, yes it is, Sterling," Futurina stated.  "Please remember to sip.  It is potent."  She poured him a glass knowing he wouldn't take no for an answer.  She turned her attention back to the question at hand.

"Well, since we are talking about what we discovered in our individual investigations, I guess I'll go first," She stated then took a sip from her gauntlet.  "As you know I have lived on Earth as an exile for quite some time.  I could not go to Alfheim to purchase my favored drink," she held up the bottle.  "Svartalheimr has no such ruling against me and I know where the markets are here.  Svartalheimr is the realm of the Dark Elves." She clarified.

"I went there to make a purchase and see if they knew anything about what was going on," She explained.  "There are many factions of Dark Elves.  I gleaned that the Drow faction, who worship a spider goddess, have a hand in things here.  That in itself is odd as their goddess has never shown an interest in Earth before."  She took another sip, she smiled at Wyldfyre then continued.

"It could be nothing, but the gentleman who sold me this bottle also had devices similar to what Madame Marvelous found.  He said it was ' A special order for a powerful client.'  I knew he was hiding something.  I didn't dare probe deeper.  That is not wise at the market.  That was what I found."

"What did you find in way of the World Corps as possible accomplices?" she asked.

As Morgothan left the latest debriefing report on the group's progress, he noticed a shadow once again hovering near the ceiling where no object seemed placed to cast such.

As he neared an intersection, he cast a quick spell of revelation.

The form of Nyx, the Dark Fairy, was momentarily visible... she grimaced her consternation at being so easily revealed.

Morgothan grinned a twisted, somewhat evil, grin... he knew Nyx's reputation.

"Nyx, my dear... have you decided to join in the fun?", he asked.

"I'm still deciding... I will admit it hasn't been boring.", she replied.

"Why don't you join us formally then?", he asked smugly.

"You are bound to tangle in the current pursuits with Princess Krys'tal'lyn... she is the first fae of royal blood to treat fairies with true respect in a century... I'll do nothing that directly harms her...", Nyx informed him.

"Very well, we shall refrain from requiring any action from you that directly affects the Princess.", he assured her.

"So... what did you have in mind?", she asked, grinning mischievously.

Days earlier.....

From deep within her secret hideout, Lolth the Dread Spider Goddess of the Drow (Dark Elves) began planning the next phase of her own plans to aid Major Depression. "Lich de Sade, I want you to pay another visit to Ice Ray Academy. This time though, take some other Drow with you as well as any other villainous beings you can recruit. Your job is to kidnap a teacher or two students of your choice but preferably all three if able. Aphrael that evil hag is getting too close with her so-called "heroic" allies to uncovering who Major Depression is and I want her distracted and very distressed so she and her academy are unable and unavailable to help out further with Acidburn and the others.*

"From what I've garnered from BADGE and our combined sources as the Star Force, I don't think the World Corps or Judge Alpha are involved directly. They have an agenda of their own," Starmaster said. "There is a new, small scale organization that Catalyst has intercepted some buzz about called 'Operation Scrooge'. It seems that with the heightened concerns about Morphon Powered people across the world, their goal is to divided allies into isolated individual states."

"How are they planning on doing that?" Futurina asked.

"We've found records of several international charitable that have had food, medicines, and/or financial assets redirected by online hackers. Instead of the goods being delivered to sanctioned locations, they have been commandeered to new drop points. Then they are confiscated by unknown individuals. It is making several nations unwilling to provide promised aid to less fortunate states."

"I would agree," Starmaster stated.  A plate of cheese and crackers was brought out in front of them while they discussed.

"Any elementals among them?" Futurina questioned.  She took a cracker and a small slice of cheese.   She took a bite and savored the flavor before taking another sip of her wine.

"I believe so," Wyldfyre said.  "Though we haven't seen anything from them yet."

"Then we need continue our investigations and find out what we can discover," Futurina sighed.  She had retired years ago which may make it easier for her to infiltrate, but she was rusty in finding leads.  "Where to next, Starmaster?"  She deferred to him for he was still active.

"Continue to gather what information we can," Starmaster said. "It is strange that these events are happening so close to the holidays. Maybe these new organizations hope the distraction of League Wars Avalanche and Santa Clause being involved will help them continue to be mostly unnoticed."

Futurina nodded, reflecting on her past dealings with the Mythic who brought the legendary character to life. Her mind locked on his image, and she could see him harnessing his sleigh nearby a large metal and glass encased city or structure in the Arctic snow. He turned his back on her and began to climb into his seasonal transport when he staggered for a moment and fell backwards into the snow...

Shaking her head, she blinked twice and cemented the images she had into her memory, every detail she could mark to be recalled. Her eyes, which had been glowing a brilliant blue, returned to normal. As power signatures go, she never really personally noticed the byproduct of her power going active, but Starmaster and Wyldfyre both realized something unusual was up.

"Babe, you OK?" Wyldfyre asked, touching her hand. "Come on, tell me you saw the Powerball numbers for next week this time."

"Futurina," Starmaster said, his head tilting to one side. "Do you think her precognitive abilities have kicked in?"

"Shhh," Futurina said as she batted Wyldfyre's hand to one side. "I'm concentrating. I think someone is planning on harming Santa during League Wars..."

Not really I replied with my thoughts to Keri's question. "You know what they say. No news is good news. All she told me is that it is under investigation by BADGE and there isn't anything to be done yet!"

"Want to hang out after school?" Keri asked. Maybe we can look at it from a different angle.

"Sure," I said. I was grateful for any opportunity to act rather than sit on my hands while waiting for paint to dry. "The usual place?"

"Of course," Keri said. "See you there at 4pm."
